Taster weeks
Deciding on a speciality can be a daunting and sometimes overwhelming process. In order to provide further insight into the day-to-day activities of an Orthopaedic surgeon, Edinburgh Orthopaedics offers a number of taster weeks to both undergraduate students and trainee doctors. During these weeks, individuals will be assigned a timetable and encouraged to attend morning trauma meetings, ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatre lists and multidisciplinary team meetings. Time will be allocated to shadow the on-call speciality trainee and this may therefore include out of hours activity in the evening and/or weekend. This gives the individual a true taste of what Orthopaedic speciality training entails.
