Who we are

Our NHS service provides primary trauma care for the Edinburgh and Lothians population, performing over 6,000 operations and 30,000 outpatient consultations each year.  In addition, our Major Trauma Service provides complex trauma care for the South East of Scotland, covering a population of over 1.5 million. We were one of the very first specialist trauma centres in the UK, and since the early 1980s our consultants have had trauma as the major focus of their clinical practice. Our team includes 12 consultant orthopaedic trauma surgeons and four consultant orthogeriatricians.

What we do

Our patients are the focus of everything we do.  We treat a range of injuries including fractures and dislocations, as well as life-threatening infections.  Our trauma services cares for all patients, from young patients suffering high-energy injuries to our growing elderly population that sustain injuries following low-energy falls.  We aim to provide our patients with the highest possible level of modern and evidenced-based care.
