Foundation training

Foundation doctors rotate through the department of Orthopaedics and Trauma as part of their two-year training, for four months at a time.

Both FY1 and FY2 doctors contribute to a multidisciplinary team consisting of consultants, speciality trainees, nurse practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists to provide high quality care for both elective and trauma patients. We are fortunate to have specialist input from a team of dedicated Orthogeriatricians who support the complex care that is required for elderly patients presenting with orthopaedic trauma. This has been developed over recent years and has led to a significant improvement in both patient care and foundation doctor experience. Aside from ward duties, foundation doctors are encouraged to attend outpatient clinics, theatre lists and support the on-call team. Dedicated sessions have been allocated within the re-designed rota to ensure that foundation trainees experience these learning opportunities without additional clinical pressures.
