Wards at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh 

Ward 108 and 109 – adult trauma

Located on the first floor of the hospital.

Ward 209 – adult reconstruction (also known as elective) and adult trauma

Ward 220 – adult reconstruction

Located on the second floor of the hospital.

Outpatient Department 6 (OPD 6)

Clinic appointments at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh take place here. We also carry out some clinics for certain conditions at Lauriston Building, St John's Hospital Livingston and East Lothian Community Hospital. 

Day Surgery Unit (DSU)

Patients who are planned to stay less than 24 hours in hospital after their surgery usually attend here on the morning of their surgery.

The entrance can be found through separate doors just to the right of the entrance to the hospital opposite the new Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Follow the signs to the Day Surgery Unit and take the stairs or lift to the first floor. There is a ward attached to the unit where patients recover after their operation before going home that evening or the following morning.

Pre-Assessment Clinic and Day of Surgery Admissions (PAC/DOSA)

Located on the first floor between wards 108 and 109.

Patients often attend here to be reviewed a few weeks before their surgery date.

Patients who are planned to stay more than 24 hours in hospital usually attend here on the morning of their surgery. After their operation, they will be taken directly to the ward they will be staying in.

On the Day of Surgery  

Patients will have been given details about where and when to attend on the morning of surgery and any specific instructions, such as when to start fasting. Members of the nursing, anaesthetic and surgical teams review patients before their procedure.
