Our research into the management of trauma has earned us a global reputation, and we regularly produce high level peer-reviewed original publications. Our registered charity SORT-IT helps us to deliver our extensive research programme, funding a competitive research fellowship for a surgeon in training to develop an area of research as part of a higher degree. We have strong links to the University of Edinburgh, with full-time academic surgeons and honorary professors.
The education and training of our peers, as well as the next generation of surgeons, is a key part of what we do. This includes our International Trauma Symposium and Instructional Trauma Course that we have hosted in Edinburgh annually since 1986. We are consistently rated as providing one of the UK’s best surgical training schemes. We have two international trauma fellows attached to our department at any one time. These senior trainees are with our service for a year of subspecialist training in trauma management and our previous fellows form an excellent international network for teaching and collaboration.
